Underwater Sounds

Sound

    Things You Will Need
    • 2 balloons
    • Wristwatch
    • Water

    Do This

    1. Blow up a balloon.
    2. Hold the balloon next to your ear. Hold a watch on the other side of the balloon.
    3. Can you hear the watch ticking?
    4. Fill the second balloon with water and repeat the experiment.
    5. Does the water make the watch ticking sound louder or quieter?

    What Should Have Happened

The sound of the watch should have been louder through the water-filled balloon. Sound travels about four times faster through water than it does through air.
